Ingredients:
🔸️ 1 cup yellow lentils
🔸️ 1 medium onion
🔸️ 1 medium tomato
🔸️ 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
🔸️ 1 inch ginger, grated
🔸️ Green chilies
🔸️ 1 tsp cumin seeds
🔸️ 1 tsp mustard seeds
🔸️ 1 tsp mustard seeds
🔸️ 1 tsp red chili powder, garam masala
🔸️2 tbsp ghee
🔸️ Fresh coriander
🔸️Salt
Instructions:
🔸️ Rinse the lentils well under running water.
🔸️ In a pressure cooker, add lentils, water, turmeric powder, and salt.
🔸️ Cook for 3-4 whistles.
🔸️ In a pan, heat 2 tbsp ghee or oil
🔸️ Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and let them crackle
🔸️ Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown
🔸️ Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies, and sauté until the raw smell disappears
🔸️ Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft and mushy
🔸️ Add red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes
🔸️ Add the cooked lentils to the onion-tomato mixture
🔸️ Adjust the consistency by adding water if the dal is too thick
🔸️ Simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavours to blend
🔸️ In a small pan, heat 1 tbsp ghee.
🔸️Add cumin seeds and let them splutter
🔸️Add dried red chilies, garlic slices, and curry leaves, and sauté until garlic turns golden
🔸️Add asafoetida and red chili powder, stir, and immediately pour this tadka over the dal.
🔸️Sprinkle fresh coriander leaves on top and serve hot with rice or naan
🔸️Squeeze a little lemon juice over the dal for extra tanginess.
